The Targa Florio is an open road endurance automobile race held near Palermo, Sicily. Created in 1906 by Vincenzo Florio, an automobile enthusiast and pioneer race driver, the first Targa Florio covered 277 miles (446 km) through 704 curves of hilly terrain and became known as one of the toughest race competitions in Europe. It escalated in stature, becoming one of Europe's most important races, prior to the establishment of the 24 hours of Le Mans and the Mille Miglia races. The name Porsche was associated with Targa Florio as early as 1922, when four Austro-Daimler “Saschas” , designed by Ferdinand Porsche, were entered into the race. Porsche proceeded to win 11 Targa Florio races between 1957 and 1973.
