Porsche had been successful at motor racing since the beginning, starting with the 356 model. This car used a tubular chassis with a 1100cc engine so it was both light and quick. This first model, with chassis number 356.001 was only a few weeks old when, in July 1948, it scored its first class victory in the Innsbruck City Race.
