Mulsanne is the name of the renowned straight that is part of the 24 hours of Le Mans, the famous sports car endurance race. The race has been held annually since 1923 on the Circuit de la Sarthe near the town of Le Mans, Sarthe, France. Porsche is the most successful marquee in the history of the 24 hour race, having achieved 16 overall victories. Mulsanne, the stretch of nominally straight French public thoroughfare became known as the test pad for engineers to experiment with radical car aerodynamics, and became the venue for breaking new automotive speeds. After a new breed of sports cars had been clocked at over 230 mph on the 5km (3.1 mi) Mulsanne straight, two chicanes were inserted to slow the cars down, bringing the track length up to 8.45 miles.
